Most charterers try to ship their cargo before the end of May, which, together with the shortage of spot tonnage, leads to a rapid increase in freight rates.

On the 19th week there is a slight increase in freight rates in the Azov Sea region. Thus, the rate for the shipment of 3,000 mts of wheat from Azov to Marmara Sea ports rose to USD 20 pmt. The increase in freight rates in all directions is due to the shortage of vessels in the Azov Sea. Many shipowners still prefer to take cargoes from the Ukrainian Black Sea ports, where charterers offer higher rates, or to operate in the Marmara and Mediterranean Seas.
On the 18th week in the Azov sea region freight rates are mostly maintained at last week’s level. Thus, the rate for the shipment of 3,000 tons of wheat from Azov to Marmara sea ports remains at the level of USD 18 pmt. Despite the continuation of the lockdown in Turkey and the complication of the economic situation in the country, the flow of cargoes to this direction remains stable, which allows to maintain the current level of freight rates.

On the 16th week, the Azov-Black Sea region has again seen a drop in freight rates. Thus, the rate for the shipment of 3,000 tons of wheat from the Azov Sea to the ports of the Marmara Sea is $ 16 per ton. Charterers continue to point out the difficulty of concluding contracts for Turkey and are increasingly focused on the Eastern Mediterranean countries and Italy. At the beginning of May, there will be a slight increase in shipments of corn to these destinations.
On the 15th week the freight rates in the Azov Sea region keep the previous week level . Thus, the rate for the shipment of 3,000 tons of wheat from the Azov Sea to the ports of the Marmara Sea is USD 17 pmt. There are lesser grain cargoes on the market, but at the same time, the level of freight rates is supported by an increase in the cargo flow of coal and sulfur to Turkey. Many shipowners consider only non-grain cargoes, since the rates for them are often higher than for grain. Thus, for example, the freight rate for coal cargo from Rostov to TBS will be closer to USD 17 pmt.
On the 14th week the drop in freight rates in the Azov-Black Sea region continues. Thus, the rate for the shipment of 3,000 tons of wheat from the Azov Sea to the ports of the Marmara Sea dropped to $ 17 per ton. Many shippers note that there is less and less cargo left in the fields and that prices for it are not falling, despite the sharp decline in demand for Russian wheat on the world market.
On the 13th week, freight rates in the Azov-Black Sea region continue to fall. Thus, contracts for the shipment of 3,000 tons of wheat from the Azov Sea to the ports of the Marmara Sea are concluded at the level of $ 18 per ton. Due to the sharp fall in the lira, the conclusion of new contracts with Turkish buyers has been almost completely suspended, as a result of which a very small number of cargo remains on the market.
